What Not to Do After an IV Drip: Key Dos and Don’ts
After an IV drip, keep the bandage on for at least 15 minutes, drink plenty of water, and skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, and long hot showers for the rest of the day. Most people feel great right away, but a few simple aftercare habits help your body absorb the fluids and vitamins and lower the small chance of bruising or irritation at the IV site. This guide covers exactly what to do, and what to avoid, before and after your infusion.
At DripWell, a licensed RN administers every drip, whether you visit our Bedford studio or we come to you across southern and central New Hampshire. Here is how to get the most from your treatment.
What should you avoid after an IV drip?
The don’ts are short and easy to follow. In the hours after your infusion, steer clear of a few things that can undo the benefits or aggravate the injection site.
- Don’t remove the bandage too soon. Leave it on for 15 minutes to an hour so the vein can seal and you avoid bruising.
- Don’t hit the gym right away. Skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day; heavy movement can raise site bleeding and dizziness.
- Don’t drink alcohol. Alcohol is dehydrating and works against the hydration and nutrients you just received.
- Don’t take a long, hot shower or soak the site. Once the bandage is off, use lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing the injection area.
- Don’t stand up quickly. Rise slowly for the first hour to prevent lightheadedness.
- Don’t ignore new symptoms. Pain, swelling, redness, or discharge at the site should be reported to your provider right away.
What should you do after an IV drip?
Good aftercare is mostly about rest and rehydration. These simple steps can help your body make the most of the fluids and vitamins.
- Keep drinking water. Aim for at least 24 ounces afterward to support circulation and help your body use the nutrients.
- Eat a balanced snack or meal. Some protein and carbohydrates help steady your blood sugar and energy.
- Give yourself downtime. Light activity is fine; plan to take it easy and rest so you recover well.
- Watch the site. A little tenderness is normal. Apply gentle pressure if you notice minor bleeding when the bandage comes off.
How should you prepare before your appointment?
What you do beforehand matters just as much. A little prep makes your visit smoother and your veins easier to access.
Hydrate and eat first
Drink two large glasses of water (about 24 ounces) before treatment so your veins are plump and easy to find. Have a balanced meal with carbohydrates and protein a couple of hours before to keep your blood sugar stable, and go easy on coffee, tea, and soda, which can be dehydrating.
Time your workout and review your meds
Try not to exercise in the two hours before and after your appointment. Let your RN know about any medication changes, new health concerns, or supplements you take, so your drip can be tailored safely to you.
During your drip: staying comfortable
Your visit is designed to be relaxing. To stay comfortable and safe while the infusion runs, keep your legs uncrossed for good circulation, ask for help if you need to use the restroom, and rise slowly afterward. Tell your RN immediately if you feel dizzy or nauseated or notice an unusual taste; these are easy to address on the spot.
How long do the effects last?
It depends on the drip and on you. A standard hydration or vitamin infusion takes about 45 minutes door to door, and many people feel refreshed within a day. NAD+ infusions run longer, roughly two to four hours, and are often part of a series for cumulative benefits. Individual results vary, and IV therapy is meant to support wellness, not treat or cure disease.
