Choosing the Right Type of IV Fluid for Your Needs

The IV fluid used as the base of your drip matters as much as the vitamins added to it. Most wellness IV therapy uses crystalloid solutions such as normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride) or Lactated Ringer’s, which rehydrate quickly and carry electrolytes and nutrients straight into your bloodstream. Choosing the right base fluid comes down to how dehydrated you are, what you want the drip to do, and the guidance of the licensed clinician administering it.

At DripWell, a licensed RN reviews your goals and health history before every appointment and selects the fluid and additives that fit you. Here is a clear, jargon-free guide to the main IV fluid types so you know what to expect.

What are IV fluids, exactly?

IV fluids are sterile solutions delivered directly into a vein, bypassing the digestive system so your body can absorb hydration, electrolytes, and nutrients almost immediately. That direct route is why a drip can help you feel restored in about 45 minutes, where drinking water and taking pills would take far longer and deliver far less. IV fluids fall into two broad families: crystalloids and colloids.

Crystalloid vs. colloid solutions

Crystalloid solutions contain small molecules of water, salts, and sometimes sugar that move easily across cell membranes. They are affordable, widely used, and the standard base for hydration and wellness drips. Normal saline and Lactated Ringer’s are both crystalloids.

Colloid solutions contain larger molecules that stay in the bloodstream longer to expand blood volume. They are reserved for serious clinical situations such as major blood loss or severe dehydration, and are administered in hospital settings, not for elective wellness therapy.

For the mobile and in-office drips people book for hydration, immune support, recovery, or a wellness boost, a crystalloid base is what you will receive.

The three types of crystalloid fluids

Crystalloids are grouped by tonicity, meaning how their concentration compares to the fluid inside your cells. This determines how water shifts in and out of cells.

Isotonic solutions

Isotonic fluids match the concentration of your body’s cells, so they expand blood volume without pulling water into or out of the cells. This is the workhorse category for wellness IV therapy. Examples include 0.9% normal saline and Lactated Ringer’s (which also supplies potassium, calcium, and lactate). These are the base fluids behind most hydration and vitamin drips.

Hypotonic solutions

Hypotonic fluids are more dilute than your cells, so water moves out of the bloodstream and into the cells. Clinicians may use solutions like 0.45% saline for specific medical needs. They require careful monitoring and are not a general wellness choice.

Hypertonic solutions

Hypertonic fluids are more concentrated than your cells and draw water out of the cells into the bloodstream. Solutions such as 3% saline are used in controlled clinical scenarios and are not part of routine wellness drips.

How the right base fluid supports your drip

Your base fluid is the vehicle; the additives are the payload. Once your RN selects an isotonic base suited to you, targeted vitamins, minerals, and medications can be added to support a specific goal. A few common pairings:

  • Everyday rehydration after travel, heat, or a hard workout, built on a straightforward saline base.
  • Immune and recovery blends that may help you bounce back, layering in vitamins and minerals.
  • Beauty and glow formulas that can support skin and hair with antioxidants like glutathione.

How to choose the right IV fluid for you

You do not have to decode tonicity charts on your own. The best fluid depends on your hydration status, your goal for the session, and any health considerations. That is exactly what your DripWell RN is there for: at your visit, they review your history, check for signs of dehydration such as dark urine, dry mouth, fatigue, or dizziness, and recommend a base fluid and additives tailored to you. Every drip is FSA/HSA eligible, and we come to you at home, at your office or event, or you can visit our Bedford studio.

Frequently asked questions.

What IV fluid is used in wellness IV therapy?

Most wellness drips use an isotonic crystalloid base, typically 0.9% normal saline or Lactated Ringer's. Your DripWell RN selects the base and any vitamin or mineral additives based on your goals and health history.

What is the difference between saline and Lactated Ringer's?

Both are isotonic crystalloids that rehydrate and expand blood volume. Normal saline is sodium chloride in water, while Lactated Ringer's also provides potassium, calcium, and lactate, making it a fuller electrolyte solution.

How long does an IV drip take?

Standard hydration and vitamin drips take roughly 45 minutes door to door. NAD+ infusions run longer, about 2 to 4 hours. Your RN will confirm timing when you book.

Can I get IV therapy at home in New Hampshire?

Yes. DripWell brings RN-administered IV therapy to your home, office, or event across Bedford, Manchester, Nashua, Concord, and southern and central NH, and also offers appointments at our Bedford studio.
